He'd gotten enough charge in the emergency batteries from the car charger to run some of the armor's baseline functions, and fortunately, swapping out of backpack mode is one of them. He lets the armor assemble around him, so that the reactor is accessible. And then he opens the assembled suit and immediately steps right back out of it, so that all his squishy human organs are not accessible. Just in case blasting the suit with huge amounts of electricity somehow goes wrong. Safety first! ]
